Are frozen washcloths safe for teething puppies?

The combination of cold and light chewing resistance from a twisted washcloth mimics the relief of a store bought chilled toy at essentially no cost, and most puppies take to it readily.

Once the fabric starts to fray or come apart under chewing, remove it, since loose threads can be swallowed. Never leave a puppy alone with a washcloth or any fabric chew unsupervised.

Wet the cloth thoroughly, twist it into a rope or knot it loosely so there is some texture to bite into, and freeze it for at least an hour on a flat tray so it holds its shape rather than clumping. A cloth frozen too briefly will not stay cold long enough to give meaningful relief before it thaws.

Use a plain, undyed cotton cloth rather than one with a printed pattern or synthetic fibers, since some dyes and synthetic blends are more likely to irritate a puppy's mouth or shed fibers that do not break down as easily if swallowed.

Offer it for short sessions, five to ten minutes at a time, over a washable floor or an easy to clean spot, since a thawing washcloth does drip. Once your puppy loses interest or the cloth becomes fully soft, refreeze it for next time rather than leaving it out to dry and lose its usefulness. Keeping two or three cloths in rotation in the freezer means a fresh one is always ready when your puppy wants one.
