Names dogs learn quickly

Dogs pick out short names with a clear, strong vowel most easily, which is why one or two syllable names are so popular. Try saying a shortlist out loud in a happy voice and in a calm, firm voice: the one that feels natural in both will be the one you actually use.

Avoid names that sound like everyday cues. A dog called Kit may confuse "sit", and Bo can blur with "no". If you already have a pet, choose a name that starts with a different sound.
