Are silicone feeding mats easy to clean?

Silicone does not absorb grease, saliva or food color the way woven fabric mats do, which is why a fabric mat left under a bowl for a few weeks often smells musty even after washing. A smooth silicone surface also flexes, so dried kibble dust or gravy residue lifts off with light pressure instead of grinding into fibers.

Wipe the mat after each meal if your dog splashes water or drops food, which for a typical medium dog takes about 15 seconds with a paper towel or cloth. Once or twice a week, wash it properly in warm soapy water or place it on the top rack of the dishwasher, since the lower rack sits closer to the heating element and can warp thinner silicone over many cycles.

Mats with a honeycomb or ridged pattern, designed to trap more splashed water, collect crumbs in the grooves that a flat wipe will not reach. A soft bottle brush or an old toothbrush clears these channels in under a minute. Mats with a deep raised lip also need to be tipped and drained, since standing water left in the channel can grow a slight film within two or three days in a warm kitchen.

Look for mats made from food grade silicone without a bonded fabric backing, since bonded layers can peel and trap moisture underneath over time. A one piece mat without seams gives bacteria nowhere to hide and generally lasts several years of daily washing without cracking or curling at the edges.
