At what age should I start trimming a puppy's nails?

A puppy that has its paws handled regularly from 8 weeks old rarely develops the fear response adult dogs sometimes show, simply because there was never a first scary experience to react against. Even before doing an actual trim, spend a few days just touching and gently squeezing each toe for a few seconds while giving a treat.

Puppy nails are thin, sharp, and grow quickly, often needing a trim every 1 to 2 weeks through the first 4 to 6 months, compared to the 3 to 4 week schedule most adult dogs settle into. Sharp puppy nails also scratch people and furniture more, which is extra motivation to stay on top of trims early.

Just take the very tip off, a millimeter or less, so mistakes are unlikely and the session ends quickly. Doing one or two nails a day rather than all four paws at once keeps a young puppy's attention span from running out before you finish.

The paw handling involved in early nail trims also builds general comfort with being touched all over, which pays off well beyond nail care alone, making later tasks like vet exams, tick checks, and grooming noticeably easier. Puppies introduced to this kind of gentle handling from 8 weeks old often grow into adult dogs that tolerate a wide range of physical handling with minimal fuss.

By around 4 months old, most puppies have transitioned from needing trims every 1 to 2 weeks to something closer to the adult 3 to 4 week rhythm, so this is a natural point to start spacing sessions out a little further apart.
