Can dogs drink coffee?

A 240 ml (8 oz) mug of brewed coffee holds about 95 mg of caffeine, and a single espresso shot about 60 to 65 mg. Coffee beans and dry grounds are far more concentrated per gram, and a dog that eats used grounds from a filter or a bag of beans can take in a large dose. Chocolate-covered espresso beans combine caffeine with theobromine.

Coffee capsules add a plastic or aluminum casing that can cause blockages.

Signs usually start within 30 to 60 minutes and can include restlessness, hyperactivity, vomiting, panting, a racing heart, high body temperature, tremors, and seizures. Effects can last many hours. The risk depends on the amount of caffeine and the size of the dog.

Iced coffee drinks, coffee liqueurs, tiramisu, coffee ice cream, and mocha desserts all contain caffeine, and some add chocolate or alcohol. Coffee grounds are sometimes used in gardens as a soil improver, which can tempt dogs.

Decaffeinated coffee still contains a small amount of caffeine.

Empty coffee filters and capsules into a lidded bin, store beans and grounds in closed cupboards, and do not leave mugs on low tables. If you use grounds in the garden, dig them into the soil where your dog cannot reach them. Coffee shop cups left on car seats or park benches are another source to watch on walks.
