Can dogs eat avocado?

Short answer

Avocado is best left off your dog's menu. It contains persin, a compound that is seriously toxic to birds, rabbits and horses; dogs are much less sensitive, but the flesh is very fatty, the stone is a classic cause of blockages, and guacamole usually contains onion and garlic, which are toxic.

Persin and dogs

Persin is found in the leaves, bark, skin and stone, with lower levels in the flesh. Dogs tolerate it better than many other species, so a small lick of plain avocado is not an emergency. The skin and leaves carry more, and a dog chewing on an avocado tree or peelings may vomit or have diarrhea.

If you keep birds or rabbits, keep avocado well away from them too.

Fat and the stone

Avocado has around 160 calories per 100 g, mostly from fat. Fatty foods can trigger stomach upset and, in some dogs, inflammation of the pancreas. The stone is about the size of a golf ball, smooth, and easily swallowed by a medium dog, where it can lodge in the stomach or intestine.

A dog that has swallowed a stone may seem fine for a day or more before vomiting starts, which is why vets prefer to hear about it straight away.

Guacamole and avocado dishes

Guacamole typically includes onion, garlic, chili, lime and salt. Onion and garlic can damage a dog's red blood cells, so a dog that has licked out a guacamole bowl needs a call to the vet. Avocado toast may also carry seasonings, and dips often contain dairy.

Avocado in dog food labels

A few commercial dog foods list avocado oil or avocado meal as ingredients. These are processed to low persin levels and used in measured amounts, which is very different from a dog eating a whole fruit or a bowl of guacamole. Their presence in a recipe is not a reason to share fresh avocado at home.

Key takeaways

  • Avocado offers dogs no benefit and several risks.
  • Dogs are less affected by persin than birds or horses, but not immune.
  • The stone is a common cause of stomach and intestinal blockage.
  • Guacamole usually contains toxic onion and garlic.
