Can dogs eat cinnamon?

Ground cinnamon is fine in small amounts, but a dog that gets into a spice jar and inhales the powder may cough, sneeze, and struggle to catch its breath for a few minutes. Cinnamon sticks are hard and woody; chewing them can irritate the mouth, and swallowed pieces are hard to digest. Cinnamon essential oil is highly concentrated and can irritate skin and the gut.

Keep spice jars and oils in closed cupboards.

Cinnamon rolls, cinnamon buns, and churros are high in sugar and fat. Many cinnamon bakes include raisins, and some spice blends such as pumpkin spice and mixed spice contain nutmeg. Sugar-free icings and syrups may use xylitol, which is dangerous to dogs.

Cinnamon cereals often have high sugar content.

A pinch of cinnamon in homemade dog biscuits made with oat flour, egg, and pumpkin is a common and safe recipe. Keep it to about a quarter teaspoon per batch. Some owners like the smell it adds to baking.

Cinnamon is sometimes promoted online for blood sugar or joint health in dogs; there is no reliable evidence for these claims.

Move your dog to fresh air, offer water, and wipe its mouth and nose gently. Coughing usually settles quickly. If your dog also ate a baked good, check the ingredients for raisins, nutmeg, chocolate, or xylitol. If the baked good was plain, watch for mild stomach upset over the next day.
