Can dogs eat donuts?

A typical ring donut carries around 250 to 300 calories, with 12 to 17 g of fat absorbed during frying. For a small dog, one donut can equal half its daily energy needs. Rich fried food is a common trigger for vomiting, diarrhea, and pancreatitis, particularly in small breeds and overweight dogs.

Sugar adds calories without any benefit and can cause loose stools in large amounts.

Chocolate frosting and chocolate sprinkles contain cocoa. Coffee and mocha glazes contain caffeine. Some fillings use custard or cream, which add more fat and lactose. Jam fillings are sugary, and grape jelly should be avoided because grapes are toxic to dogs.

Cake-style donuts are often flavored with nutmeg. The small amount in one donut is not a concern, but it is another reason not to let a dog work through a dozen.

Donut boxes on desks and coffee tables are an easy target. A large dog can finish half a dozen before anyone notices. Check which flavors were in the box, how many are gone, and whether the cardboard or wax paper was eaten.

Glazes stick to fur and paws, so wipe your dog's face afterward to stop it licking at the sugar.

Donut-shaped dog chews and baked dog treats are widely available and far lower in fat. For something homemade, bake small rings from oat flour and egg. Your dog cares about sharing the moment, not about the frosting.
