Can dogs eat ginger?

Peel a small piece of fresh ginger and grate it finely. A pinch, roughly an eighth of a teaspoon, is plenty for a small dog, and up to a quarter of a teaspoon for a large dog. Mix it into food rather than offering it on its own, as many dogs dislike the heat.

Ground dried ginger is stronger; use even less.

Ginger is widely used by people for nausea, and you may read suggestions to give it to dogs for travel sickness. Evidence in dogs is limited, and it is not a treatment for vomiting. A dog that vomits repeatedly or gets very carsick needs to see a vet, who can offer proven options.

Ginger may have a mild effect on blood clotting and can interact with some medicines. If your dog takes daily medication or is due for surgery, ask your vet before giving any ginger at all.

Ginger biscuits, gingerbread and ginger cake are sugary and often contain nutmeg or other spices. Crystallized ginger is coated in sugar. Pickled sushi ginger is soaked in vinegar and sugar. Ginger beer and ginger ale are drinks, not dog treats. Dishes cooked with ginger usually also contain garlic and onion.

Some commercial dog biscuits include small amounts of ginger. These are formulated for dogs and fine within the feeding guide. Homemade ginger dog treats should use only a pinch per batch and no sugar.
