Can dogs eat hot cross buns?

Some dogs develop kidney injury after eating grapes or dried grapes, while others eat them without obvious harm. Researchers are still working out why, so vets treat every exposure as potentially serious. The amount that causes problems is not predictable from the dog's size.

Vomiting within a few hours is often the first sign, followed by lethargy, loss of appetite, and reduced urination over the next one to three days.

Vets have more options when they see a dog soon after it has eaten dried fruit, before the kidneys are affected. That is why calling straight away is so important. Have the packaging ready so you can tell them roughly how many buns were eaten, your dog's weight, and the time.

Making your dog vomit at home is not recommended unless your vet specifically instructs you to.

Simnel cake, fruit loaves, Chelsea buns, teacakes, and Eccles cakes all contain dried fruit. Chocolate-chip hot cross buns carry cocoa instead, and some varieties include both. The mixed spice in buns contains nutmeg, which is only a problem in large amounts.

Easter egg hunts are another risk period, with chocolate hidden around gardens and homes.

Buns are often left in open packs on the counter or toasted and left on plates. Store them in a bread bin or high cupboard, and ask visitors not to share their breakfast.

Plain toast is a safer thing to share if your dog insists on joining in.
