Can dogs eat pickles?

Last updated 23 September 2026 · How we write and check this

Short answer

Pickles are not toxic in themselves, but they are not a good snack for dogs. The cucumber is fine; the brine is very salty and pickles often contain garlic, onion, spices or sugar. One plain dill pickle slice is unlikely to cause harm, but make fresh cucumber the go-to instead.

Salt and seasonings

A single large dill pickle can contain over 1 g of sodium. For a small dog, that is a big salt load for one snack. Many pickles also include garlic cloves in the jar, onion slices, mustard seeds, chili flakes or peppercorns. Bread and butter pickles are sweetened with sugar.

The simpler the pickle, the less risky it is, but it is still a salty treat.

Fresh cucumber is better

Fresh cucumber has the same crunch without the salt and seasonings, and it is around 95 percent water. If your dog begs while you eat a pickle, a slice of fresh cucumber is the easy swap. Most dogs are just as happy.

How salt affects dogs

Dogs need some sodium, but their complete food already supplies enough. A sudden large salt load draws water out of the body's cells, causing intense thirst and, in severe cases, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, tremors and seizures. Small dogs are affected by far less salt than large ones, so a few pickles can matter for a toy breed.

If your dog ate several

Check the jar for garlic or onion. Make sure fresh water is available. Mild thirst and a single episode of loose stools are common. Vomiting, lots of drinking and urinating, wobbliness or tremors can point to salt poisoning, which needs a vet.

Pickle brine is even saltier than the pickles, so never let a dog drink from the jar.

Other pickled foods

Pickled onions are both salty and toxic. Pickled beetroot, gherkins, jalapeños, sauerkraut and kimchi all bring salt and seasonings that dogs do not need.

Key takeaways

  • Pickles are very salty and often contain garlic or onion.
  • A single plain dill slice is unlikely to cause harm.
  • Fresh cucumber is a much better crunchy treat.
