Can dogs eat turmeric?

Turmeric is a root in the ginger family, dried and ground into a bright yellow spice. Its main active compound is curcumin, which is poorly absorbed when eaten on its own. Some supplements add black pepper extract or fats to increase absorption.

A pinch sprinkled into food will mostly color your dog's bowl yellow.

Turmeric and curcumin supplements may affect blood clotting and can interact with certain medications. They may not suit dogs with some gallbladder or liver conditions, or dogs scheduled for surgery. Large amounts can also cause stomach upset.

Homemade golden paste recipes combine turmeric with oil and black pepper and are widely shared online. Doses in these recipes vary a lot. It is best not to start giving them without talking to your vet first, especially if your dog takes any medicine.

Curries, dhal, and yellow rice often use turmeric alongside onion, garlic, chili, and oil. These dishes are not suitable for dogs, and the turmeric is not the concern. A plain rice spoonful without sauce is a safer thing to share. Rice cooked with turmeric alone, with no onion or garlic, is not a concern in a small spoonful.
