Can I give my dog frozen fruit?

Soft, sweet fruits freeze into satisfying chewy bites. Good options include blueberries, raspberries (a few only), strawberry slices, banana coins, peeled mango cubes and seedless watermelon cubes. Apple slices go a little brown but are fine.

Frozen supermarket fruit bags are convenient, but check for mixes that include grapes, cherries with pits, or added sugar.

Frozen fruit is harder than fresh, so size matters. For a toy dog, cut pieces to pea size. For medium dogs, around 1.5 to 2 cm (under 1 in) works well. Whole frozen strawberries or large chunks can be swallowed whole by a greedy large dog.

Dogs with dental problems or older dogs may prefer fruit slightly thawed for a couple of minutes.

Mash banana with a little water, spread it onto a lick mat and freeze for two hours. Purée seedless watermelon and freeze it in a silicone ice cube tray. Drop a few blueberries into a large ice block in the paddling pool on a hot day for a fishing game.

Frozen fruit is a pleasant extra on a warm day, not a cooling treatment. Shade, fresh water and walks timed for early morning or evening matter far more. Count frozen fruit toward the daily treat allowance so calories do not creep up through a long summer.

Gulpers do better when frozen fruit is served inside a treat ball or scattered across the lawn. Searching slows eating down and turns a few pieces of fruit into ten minutes of enrichment.
