How do I change my dog's feeding schedule without problems

Last updated 23 September 2026 · How we write and check this

Short answer

Move meal times gradually, in steps of 15 to 30 minutes every couple of days, rather than switching to the new schedule all at once. Keep the food and portion size the same during the transition so only the timing is changing.

Planning the steps

Work out the total gap between your current schedule and the target one, then divide it into small daily or every other day steps, moving breakfast and dinner in the same direction so the overall rhythm of the day stays balanced.

Keeping everything else steady

Changing food type or amount at the same time as shifting the schedule makes it much harder to tell what, if anything, is causing any upset, so it is worth changing one thing at a time where possible.

Signs the change is going smoothly

A dog adjusting well shows normal appetite at the new times within a few days, firm stools, and no more than mild, brief whining around the old mealtime as the new pattern takes over.

Key takeaways

  • Shift meal times in small steps every couple of days.
  • Move both meals in the same direction to keep the day's rhythm balanced.
  • Keep food type and portion size the same during the transition.
  • Normal appetite and firm stools within a few days signal a smooth change.
