How do I desensitize a puppy to nail trims early?

A puppy that has had its paws and individual toes touched daily from 8 weeks old, with a treat given each time, develops comfort with the sensation itself long before clippers ever enter the picture, which removes a major source of fear before it has a chance to form.

After a week or two of paw handling, let your puppy see and sniff the clippers, and even touch them gently against a toe without cutting anything, so the tool itself becomes familiar rather than sudden and unexpected the first time it is actually used.

Trim just the very tip, a millimeter or less, off one or two nails in the first session, ending on a positive note with a treat rather than trying to complete all four paws. Repeating this every few days, gradually working up to a full paw, builds a routine before nails have grown long enough to need a bigger, more stressful trim.

If your puppy is already a few months old and this early desensitization was not done, all is not lost: the same gradual process still works, it simply may take a bit more patience and more repetitions than it would have with an 8 week old puppy encountering paw handling for the very first time.

Enlisting other family members to occasionally handle the puppy's paws during this early window, not just the person who will usually do trims, helps the puppy generalize comfort with paw handling to more than one specific person in the household.
