Say the puppy's name once in a happy tone, and the moment it looks toward you, reward with a small treat or praise. Repeating this five or six times a day builds the association quickly.

Using a puppy's name only to call it away from something fun, or right before a scolding, can slow down or even damage this association. Saving the name for happy, rewarding moments works better.

A puppy that is not responding reliably after two weeks of regular practice is often getting the name said too often without a consistent reward attached, since overuse without reinforcement teaches a puppy to tune the word out much like background noise. Cutting back to fewer, more deliberately rewarded repetitions, five or six a day rather than fifty, often works better than more frequent casual use.

Try a higher value reward if progress has stalled, since a piece of regular kibble may simply not be motivating enough for some puppies compared to a small piece of chicken or cheese used specifically for name training sessions.

Distraction level matters more than most owners expect, so if the name works reliably indoors but not on a walk, that is not a sign of forgetting, it simply means the skill has not yet been practiced enough in that harder context and needs its own dedicated repetitions there. Treat each new setting as its own small training goal rather than expecting one success to automatically transfer everywhere.
