How often should water bowls be refilled and washed?

Most dogs do fine with water refreshed once a day, but that changes with weather, activity and the individual dog. A dog that pants heavily after exercise or lives somewhere warm often benefits from a second refill, and heavy drinkers may need topping up more than once regardless of the season.

Refilling alone does not remove biofilm building up on the sides and bottom of the bowl, so a proper wash with soap and a rinse should happen at least daily. Multiple dogs sharing one bowl, or a bowl positioned near a food bowl where crumbs fall in, both call for washing more often than once a day.

A slimy feel when you touch the inside, floating debris, or water that looks cloudy despite being refilled recently are all signs to wash immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled clean.

A water bowl left outside needs more frequent attention than an indoor one, since sun exposure warms the water and speeds up bacterial growth, and debris like leaves, dirt or insects can fall in over the course of a day. Check an outdoor bowl at least twice daily in warm months, and bring it in overnight if temperatures drop enough that it could freeze. Homes with multiple water stations around the house, for example one upstairs and one downstairs, need the same daily attention at each spot rather than assuming that washing just one bowl covers the household's overall hygiene needs.
