Should I use a raised mat under an elevated bowl?

Elevated stands with thin rubber feet can still creep a few centimeters across polished tile or laminate as a dog pushes against the bowl while eating, especially a stand under 20 cm (8 in) tall holding a heavy dog's weight against it. A textured mat underneath adds friction and keeps the whole setup from shifting during a meal.

Even with an elevated bowl, kibble bounces out during eager eating and water drips down the outside of the bowl or the stand's frame. A mat sized a few centimeters wider than the stand's footprint on every side catches this overspill before it reaches the floor.

If your stand already sits on rubber feet or a non slip base and your dog eats calmly without flinging food, a mat mostly becomes another item to wash. In that case a folded towel kept nearby for occasional spills does the same job without permanent floor coverage.

Measure your stand's base before buying, since an undersized mat leaves the corners of the stand hanging off the edge where spills go straight to the floor anyway. A mat with a slight lip, even a shallow one, does more than a perfectly flat mat when kibble or water tends to bounce a short distance from the bowl during eating. A mat sized 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) wider than the stand on each side gives enough margin for most spills without looking oversized in a kitchen corner.
