Why does my dog always sit in my favorite chair?

Dogs rely heavily on scent to feel secure, and a chair saturated with your particular scent from regular use offers a level of comfort that an unused piece of furniture simply cannot match. This is especially noticeable if a dog gravitates to your chair specifically while you are out of the house, seeking that scent connection in your absence.

A recently vacated chair retains body heat for a while, and dogs are drawn to warm resting spots generally, which explains why a dog often claims a chair within moments of you standing up. Combined with typically soft, supportive cushioning on a favorite chair, the physical comfort factor alone would explain some of the preference even without any scent element.

Many favorite chairs sit in a central spot with a good view of the room, entryways, and household activity, which appeals to a dog's natural inclination to monitor its surroundings from a comfortable position. Once a dog has successfully claimed a spot a few times without correction, habit alone reinforces the preference further, regardless of the original reason.

Place a dog bed carrying your scent in a similarly central, comfortable location, and consistently redirect your dog there rather than the chair, rewarding generously each time it settles in the new spot. Most dogs transfer their preference within two to three weeks once the new spot offers comparable warmth, scent, and vantage.
