Why does my dog's ear smell bad after cleaning?

Some ear cleaners have their own mild scent that lingers briefly after application, and any wax loosened during massaging but not fully wiped away can also carry a faint odor for a short while. This typically fades within 30 to 60 minutes as the ear finishes drying out.

A smell that is strong, sour, or yeasty, and that remains just as noticeable hours after cleaning rather than fading, usually means there is more happening inside the ear than surface wax, since cleaning alone should reduce odor rather than reveal a stronger one underneath.
