A wire crate with a divider panel adapts as a puppy grows, folds down for storage or travel, and lets you see the puppy easily, which some owners and puppies both find reassuring during the settling in period.

A solid plastic crate blocks more visual stimulation, which can help a puppy that seems overwhelmed by watching everything happening in the room. It is also the standard requirement for most commercial airlines, so if travel is likely, this style may be worth choosing from the start.

Wire crates are generally easier to clean, since the tray slides out and wipes down quickly, while a plastic crate often needs to be partially disassembled to reach every corner after a bigger accident. For a household expecting several toileting accidents during the early weeks, that difference adds up.

Plastic crates tend to retain warmth better, which suits a short haired or small breed puppy in a cooler climate, while wire crates breathe better and suit a thick coated breed or a warmer household. Neither is objectively better across the board, so matching the crate to your specific puppy and home makes more sense than following a blanket recommendation.

If you are genuinely unsure which your puppy will prefer, a lower cost wire crate is easier to resell or pass on if it turns out not to suit your dog, whereas a decision to fly with a pet later effectively settles the choice in favor of an airline approved plastic model regardless of earlier preference.
