Can dogs eat mac and cheese?

Boxed macaroni and cheese uses a powdered cheese sauce that is high in sodium, often 500 to 700 mg per serving, plus butter and milk added at home. Homemade versions use a butter and flour sauce with a lot of cheese, and sometimes mustard powder, garlic, or onion for flavor. Baked versions may include breadcrumbs, bacon, or extra cheese on top.

A single restaurant portion can exceed 800 calories.

The combination of fat and lactose is the main problem. Dogs that are sensitive to dairy may get gas and diarrhea, and dogs prone to pancreatitis can react to the fat. Salt adds thirst.

For small dogs, even half a cup is a large amount of all three.

When the family eats pasta, set aside a spoonful of plain cooked macaroni before the sauce goes in. Add a pea-sized piece of mild cheddar on top. That gives your dog something from the meal without the rich sauce.

Let it cool first, since baked pasta holds heat.

Mac and cheese leftovers often sit on stovetops or counters in open pans. Put them in the fridge promptly in a covered container. If your dog eats a large portion, check the recipe or box for garlic and onion and keep an eye on it for a few days. Keep in mind that a dish left to cool on the stove is within reach of many large dogs.
