Can dogs eat raw bread dough?

The first danger is physical. Dough can double or triple in size in a dog's stomach, causing painful bloating. In deep-chested breeds it may also raise the risk of the stomach twisting, a life-threatening emergency. The dough can also form a solid mass that cannot pass easily.

The second danger is chemical. As yeast ferments sugars, it produces ethanol, and dogs can develop alcohol poisoning from the dough itself.

Early signs include a swollen or tight belly, unproductive retching, restlessness, and drooling. Signs of alcohol poisoning include wobbliness, confusion, weakness, slow breathing, and collapse. These can appear within an hour or two. Some dogs vomit dough, but do not try to make your dog vomit at home unless a vet tells you to.

Tell the vet the type of dough, roughly how much was eaten, and when.

Any yeast-raised dough counts: bread, pizza bases, cinnamon rolls, and rolls. Sourdough starters are also alive and ferment. Unbaked cookie dough is not yeast-based but may contain chocolate, raisins, or nuts and is very high in sugar and fat.

Frozen shop-bought dough starts rising as it thaws.

Dough is often left to prove on a counter or near a warm oven, exactly where a tall dog can reach it. Prove dough in the oven with the light on or in a room with the door closed. Clean up spilled flour and starter promptly.
