Should I cover my puppy's crate at night?

Wild canines naturally seek enclosed, den like spaces to sleep, and a wire crate left fully open on all sides can feel exposed by comparison. A breathable cover over the top and back, leaving the door side open, often reduces a puppy's tendency to watch and react to every movement in the room.

Use a lightweight, breathable fabric rather than a thick blanket, especially in warm weather, and check that the crate is not near a heat source. If your puppy chews or pulls at the cover through the bars, remove it and try again once that habit passes.

A fitted crate cover sold for the specific size works better than a draped sheet, since loose fabric can sag into the crate or catch under the door when it opens, creating a hazard rather than a comfort. If using a plain blanket instead, tuck and secure the edges so nothing hangs low enough for the puppy to grab and pull inside.

In warmer months or a room without much airflow, leave more than one side uncovered, for example the door and one long side, rather than only the door, so air can move through freely. Check the crate an hour after covering it for the first time to make sure it has not become noticeably warmer than the rest of the room.

A puppy that seems more unsettled with the cover on than off, pacing or scratching at the fabric rather than settling, may simply prefer full visibility, and that is a reasonable individual preference rather than a sign anything is wrong with the approach.
