A puppy that whines briefly then settles within a few minutes on camera or through the door is usually ready to add time. One that paces, barks steadily for the whole absence, or shows signs of panic needs the current level repeated for longer before moving on, regardless of age.

A puppy that is already older than these guideline ages but has never had any real alone time practice is not a lost cause, it simply needs to start at the beginning of the ladder rather than jumping to a duration that matches its actual age.
