Training an English Toy Spaniel: what works and what to expect

English Toy Spaniels are gentle and willing but can be quietly stubborn. They respond best to soft voices, food rewards and very short sessions. Harsh corrections upset them, and many simply stop cooperating. Teaching a few useful behaviors, such as coming when called, walking on a harness and accepting handling, is usually more valuable than long obedience routines.

House training can be slow, as it is with many toy breeds. Take puppies out frequently, especially after meals, naps and play, and consider a covered indoor toilet area for bad weather. Early, gentle socialization with calm people and dogs helps prevent shyness. Teach children to sit on the floor when holding the dog, to avoid falls.
