Spanish Water Dogs typically live 12 to 14 years and are known for hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and progressive retinal atrophy, along with two inherited conditions with DNA tests available, congenital hypothyroidism with goiter and a nervous system disorder called neuroaxonal dystrophy.

Both breeds remain relatively uncommon outside their home countries and dedicated fan communities, so buyers in most regions should expect a genuine search, some travel and a meaningful price for a well bred, health tested puppy of either dog. Truffle hunting Lagotti with proven working lines can command a particular premium among buyers specifically interested in that skill, sometimes considerably more than a companion bred puppy of the same breed.

Grooming costs favor the Spanish Water Dog slightly for owners who choose the corded route, since cords need separating by hand rather than regular professional clipping, though many pet owners of either breed still prefer a simple clip a few times a year for practicality. Feeding costs are similar given the breeds' overlapping size ranges, typically 190 to 320 g of dry food a day depending on the individual dog's size and activity level.

Anyone drawn to either breed's low shedding coat and genuine working intelligence should weigh the Lagotto's slightly more affectionate, companionable nature against the Spanish Water Dog's stronger herding and guarding instincts before choosing which working heritage fits their household better. Both dogs settle well into active family life once their scent based mental needs are consistently met.
