Portuguese Water Dog vs Standard Poodle: two curly coated water retrievers

Portuguese Water Dogs worked as crew on fishing boats off the Algarve coast, diving after lost nets, carrying messages between vessels and helping herd fish toward the nets, work reflected in their strong hindquarters and webbed feet. The Standard Poodle, despite its French associations, was originally bred in Germany to retrieve shot ducks from cold lakes, and the famous show clip actually began as a practical hunter's trim to help the dog swim more easily. Both breeds carry genuine enthusiasm for water as a direct result of that history.

A Standard Poodle is the larger of the two, reaching up to 62 cm (24 in) and 32 kg (70 lb) in a big male, while a Portuguese Water Dog tops out around 57 cm (22 in) and 27 kg (60 lb), a somewhat more compact, muscular build. Both are athletic, leggy dogs with a deep chest, which brings a shared risk of bloat that owners of either breed should understand and manage around mealtimes.

Both breeds carry a dense, curly or wavy single coat that grows continuously and sheds very little, appealing to people managing mild allergies, though no dog is fully allergen free. A Standard Poodle typically needs a professional groom every four to six weeks to manage its ever growing coat, while a Portuguese Water Dog is usually clipped every six to eight weeks, a slightly less frequent schedule. Both need brushing several times a week between salon visits to prevent matting.

Both breeds rank among the most intelligent and trainable in the dog world, learning quickly and thriving on mental work such as obedience, agility, scent work and trick training. Portuguese Water Dogs are often described as slightly more boisterous and people focused day to day, famous for wanting to be in the middle of whatever is happening around the house, while Standard Poodles can be a touch more reserved with strangers at first before warming up. Both need consistent, engaging training to avoid inventing their own entertainment.

Portuguese Water Dogs typically live 11 to 13 years and are known for hip dysplasia, a form of progressive retinal atrophy and GM1 storage disease, a severe inherited neurological disorder with a DNA test available. Standard Poodles often live a little longer, 12 to 15 years, but carry known risks around bloat, hip dysplasia, sebaceous adenitis, a skin condition, and Addison's disease. Responsible breeders of either dog run the relevant DNA tests and screen hips and eyes before breeding.

Professional grooming is the single largest recurring cost for either breed, and it is worth budgeting for realistically before bringing either dog home. A Standard Poodle's four to six week schedule adds up to roughly nine to thirteen salon visits a year, while a Portuguese Water Dog's six to eight week schedule means slightly fewer, around seven to nine visits, though the exact cost depends heavily on local groomer pricing and the specific clip requested.

Both breeds are genuinely intelligent enough to become bored destructive without regular mental work, so factor in time or cost for ongoing training, whether through classes, sport clubs or dedicated home sessions, on top of the grooming bill. Neither breed is a good fit for an owner hoping for a low maintenance, wash and go companion, and both will find their own, usually less convenient, ways to stay occupied if that need goes unmet.

Portuguese Water Dogs remain the rarer of the two outside dedicated fan communities, so expect a longer search and possibly more travel to meet a reputable breeder, while Standard Poodles are widely available through long established breed clubs across most of the world, with generations of documented health testing to draw on when comparing prospective litters. Whichever breed you choose, budgeting realistically for a lifetime of professional grooming is essential rather than optional. Neither breed disappoints an owner who goes in with realistic expectations.
