Bolognese health: what owners should know

The Bolognese is a generally healthy breed that often lives 12 to 14 years or more. Like many toy breeds, it is predisposed to kneecaps that slip out of place (patellar luxation), crowded teeth with early gum disease, and some eye problems. Responsible breeders check kneecaps and eyes before breeding and are happy to discuss the health of related dogs.
Brush your dog's teeth several times a week from puppyhood, since dental disease is the most common problem in small breeds. Ask your vet to take a look if your Bolognese skips or hops on a back leg, has bad breath with red gums, loses interest in food, or has red, weepy or cloudy eyes.
