Pomeranian health: what owners should know

Conditions the Pomeranian is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.

Conditions reported more often in Pomeranians include luxating patellas (kneecaps that slip out of place), tracheal collapse, dental disease, a hair-loss condition often called alopecia X or black skin disease, heart problems such as patent ductus arteriosus, and some eye conditions. Responsible breeders have knees checked by a vet, screen eyes and hearts, and avoid breeding the very tiniest dogs, which tend to have more problems.

Daily tooth brushing, a harness instead of a collar, a lean body and steps up to furniture prevent a lot of trouble. Book a vet visit if you hear a honking cough, especially when your dog is excited or pulling, if a hind leg is held up or skipped, if symmetrical hair loss appears on the body or tail, or if you notice red gums, bad breath or food dropped while chewing.
