Cane Corso health: what owners should know

Like many large mastiff types, the Cane Corso is predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, eyelid problems such as entropion and ectropion, and cherry eye. Idiopathic epilepsy and some heart conditions also appear in the breed. Typical lifespan is 9 to 12 years.
Responsible breeders X-ray the hips and elbows of both parents, have their eyes examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist and will show you the results. At home, keeping your dog lean is the most useful thing you can do for its joints, alongside sensible exercise during growth and bloat-aware feeding. See a vet promptly if you notice lameness that persists, squinting or a red lump in the corner of the eye, a seizure, or fainting and unusual tiredness on walks.
