Alaskan Malamute puppy growth: milestones and weight estimates

How fast an Alaskan Malamute puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.

Puppies grow quickly for the first six months, often reaching 20 to 25 kg (44 to 55 lb) by then, and continue building muscle and chest depth until around two years. Mentally they stay adolescent for longer, and many owners describe their dog as a teenager until its third birthday.

Keep puppies lean and avoid heavy pulling, long runs and repetitive jumping until the growth plates close at around 18 months; before then, harness work should be light and playful. A small number of Malamutes carry an inherited form of dwarfism (chondrodysplasia) that shortens and bows the legs, which is why good breeders test for it. If your puppy's front legs look bowed, it limps, or its growth seems out of proportion, book a vet check.
