Alaskan Malamute feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Alaskan Malamute.

Malamutes are famously efficient eaters. An adult of 38 kg (85 lb) often needs only around 400 to 500 g of dry food a day, roughly 4 to 5 cups, which is less than many owners expect for a dog this size. Working sled dogs in winter may need half as much again. Split the ration into two meals and adjust every few weeks by body shape rather than by the feeding chart.

The breed is food-motivated to the point of theft. Counter surfing, trash raiding and snatching snacks from children's hands are common complaints, so manage the kitchen and feed in a quiet spot where the dog won't feel it has to defend its bowl. Some Malamutes guard food from other dogs, and feeding in separate rooms prevents most arguments.

The dense coat hides weight gain well, so run your hands along the ribs every week. Feed away from hard exercise to reduce bloat risk, and keep plenty of fresh water available, especially after pulling work.
