Training a Bedlington Terrier: what works and what to expect

Bedlingtons are intelligent and eager to please, but they have a terrier streak and can be independent. Positive reinforcement, short sessions and variety work best. They are sensitive to harsh corrections and may shut down if handled roughly.

Between 8 and 16 weeks, arrange calm meetings with a range of friendly, vaccinated adult dogs, since a Bedlington that learns dog manners early is much less likely to pick a quarrel later. Build recall with a whistle or a single word paired with the best treats you have, and practice around rabbits only once it is reliable elsewhere. Make grooming part of training too: a few seconds standing on a table, a brush stroke, a reward, then gradually longer, so the six-weekly clip never becomes a battle.
