Training a Lakeland Terrier: what works and what to expect

Lakelands are among the quickest learners in the terrier group, which is exactly why they can be tricky. They grasp what you want within a few repetitions, then test whether the rule still applies when you are distracted or when something more interesting appears. Consistency matters more than volume: the same rule, rewarded the same way, every time.

Use rewards the dog truly values, such as food, tug games and the chance to chase a toy, and keep sessions short and fun. Recall and impulse control around small animals need the most work, and some Lakies will never be fully reliable off lead around wildlife. Early socialization with calm, well-mannered dogs reduces the terrier tendency to react to other dogs. Harsh corrections build stubbornness rather than cooperation.
