Black and Tan Coonhound health: what owners should know

Black and Tans are generally robust, but known issues include hip and elbow dysplasia, ear infections, eyelid problems, bloat and low thyroid function. Responsible breeders X-ray hips and elbows, have eyes examined, and are open about any health problems in their lines. Hunting lines and show lines can differ in build, so ask what the parents were bred for.

Weekly ear checks are the single most useful habit for this breed. Get to a vet urgently if your coonhound has a swollen belly with unproductive retching or cannot settle. Head shaking, a red or smelly ear, limping, or unexplained weight gain with low energy also need an appointment.
