How much exercise does a Black and Tan Coonhound need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Black and Tan Coonhound enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Adults need about 60 minutes of exercise a day, ideally as a couple of long walks with plenty of time to sniff. They enjoy hiking, trailing games, scentwork and man-trailing, and many take part in organized coonhound events. A 20-minute tracking session tires a Black and Tan far more than a 20-minute jog, because working a scent is hard mental labor.
Keep your hound on a lead or long line anywhere that is not securely enclosed. Once it picks up a trail, it may follow it for kilometers and simply not hear you. Garden fencing should be at least 1.5 m (5 ft) high and checked for gaps and digging spots. Howling, digging and escape attempts suggest too little to do, while stiffness and sore pads after long outings suggest too much.
