Training a Black and Tan Coonhound: what works and what to expect

Black and Tans are intelligent but independent, bred to solve a trail without any help from a handler. Patient, reward-based training with really good food works best. Keep sessions short and fun, and expect to repeat lessons more often than you would with a retriever or a herding breed. Harsh corrections tend to produce a hound that shuts down or digs in its heels.

Recall, baying and pulling on the lead are the classic challenges. Teach a 'quiet' cue and reward calm moments, but accept that some baying comes with the breed. Scent games and tracking classes channel the nose into something useful. House training, on the other hand, is usually straightforward with a consistent routine.
