Bloodhound health: what owners should know
Conditions the Bloodhound is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.
The breed is predisposed to bloat, eyelid conditions such as entropion and ectropion, ear infections, skin fold dermatitis, and hip and elbow dysplasia. Its average lifespan is also shorter than that of many dogs. Responsible breeders hip and elbow score their breeding stock, have eyes examined, and can tell you the age and cause of death of the puppy's close relatives.
Daily fold and ear care, a lean body and a calm routine around meals are the most useful habits. Bloat is an emergency: if your Bloodhound retches without bringing anything up, has a swollen or tight belly, drools more than usual, paces or seems distressed, go to a vet immediately, day or night. Also book an appointment for squinting, persistent eye discharge or a smelly ear.
