Komondor health: what owners should know

Bloat is the most serious concern for this deep-chested breed. Hip dysplasia and eye conditions such as entropion, where the eyelid rolls inward, are also recognized. Skin trouble can hide under the cords, especially when they stay damp for long periods. As with most giants, the lifespan is shorter than average, typically 10 to 12 years.

Hips, and often elbows, should be scored in both parents, and eyes examined. Ask the breeder whether bloat has occurred in the family line. At home, keep the coat dry and check the skin regularly. Seek urgent veterinary help for unproductive retching or a swollen belly, and book a check if your Komondor squints, has watery eyes, or is stiff getting up after rest.
