Bullmastiff health: what owners should know

Conditions the Bullmastiff is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.

Hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, eyelid problems such as entropion, and a higher risk of certain cancers including lymphoma are the conditions most often discussed among Bullmastiff breeders. Heart disease and an underactive thyroid also appear. Reputable breeders hip and elbow score both parents, have eyes examined and may add heart screening.

Keep your Bullmastiff lean, avoid heat, and learn the signs of bloat. A swelling belly, repeated retching that brings nothing up, heavier drooling than usual and restlessness after a meal mean an emergency vet visit, immediately. Also book a check if you notice new lumps, a persistent cough or reluctance to get up.
