Bluetick Coonhound feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Bluetick Coonhound.
An active adult Bluetick of around 30 kg (66 lb) often eats 300 to 400 g of dry food a day, roughly 3 to 4 cups, split into two meals. Hunting dogs working several nights a week in season may need more, but pet Blueticks gain weight easily, and many are gifted counter thieves. Measure portions and check body condition every couple of weeks, feeling for ribs under a thin layer of fat.
Long ears dip into food and water, so a narrower, deeper bowl or a snood at mealtimes helps keep them clean and dry. Blueticks are deep-chested, so avoid hard exercise just before or after meals. If your hound inhales its dinner, a slow feeder or a scatter feed in the garden turns eating into a sniffing exercise, which suits the breed perfectly.
