How much exercise does a Bluetick Coonhound need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Bluetick Coonhound enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Adults need around 60 to 90 minutes of activity daily, ideally including time to follow scent. Long walks on a 10 m (33 ft) long line, tracking games, mantrailing and hiking suit them well, and some owners join coonhound field events or nose work classes. A Bluetick that has spent an hour sniffing is usually a quiet, contented one for the rest of the day.
Too little activity leads to howling, digging and escape attempts. When a scent pulls hard enough, Blueticks will climb or dig under fences, so a secure boundary of at least 1.8 m (6 ft) with buried wire is wise. They handle heat better than many large breeds, but still exercise in cooler hours during summer and watch for heavy panting or lagging.
