Akita feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Akita.
Expect an adult Akita to eat about 400 to 550 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 4 to 5.5 cups, split into two meals. Many are less food-driven than retrievers and some are downright picky, which is normal for the breed. If your dog walks away from its meal, lift the bowl after 15 to 20 minutes rather than leaving food down all day.
Food guarding is common. Feed your Akita in its own space, away from other pets and children, and never let a child reach into its bowl. From puppyhood, walk past during meals and drop a tasty extra into the bowl, so a young Akita learns that people near its food are good news rather than a threat.
The deep chest puts the breed at some risk of bloat. Split meals, a quiet hour before and after hard exercise, and not letting your dog gulp huge volumes of water in one go are simple precautions. Retching without producing anything, restlessness or a swollen belly means an emergency trip to the vet.
