How much exercise does a Border Collie need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Border Collie enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Plan on at least 90 minutes a day for an adult, and more for working lines. A good day might include a 45 minute off-lead run in a safe area, 20 minutes of structured training or a dog sport, and a scent game or puzzle in the evening. They shine at agility, obedience, herding trials, flyball, disc dog and treibball, a sport in which the dog pushes large exercise balls into a goal.
Watch for obsessive patterns rather than simple tiredness. Staring at shadows, spinning, chasing reflections or fixating on the ball are signs that the dog is overaroused or under-occupied. The fix is usually more thinking work and more practiced relaxation, not more fetch. On hot days, keen dogs will run well past the point of safety, so you have to call the break.
