How much exercise does a Chinese Shar-Pei need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Chinese Shar-Pei enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Shar-Pei are moderate-energy dogs. Two brisk walks totaling 45 to 60 minutes a day, plus some play in the garden, keep most adults fit and content. They enjoy sniffing new routes more than repetitive fetch, and many will simply sit down when a game bores them.
The thick skin and short muzzle make heat a concern. In summer, walk in the cooler hours, avoid strenuous activity above about 25 °C (77 °F), and watch for heavy panting or reluctance to continue. Most also dislike rain and cold wind, and a coat is sensible for older dogs in winter. Keep your dog on lead in unfenced areas, because a Shar-Pei that meets a dog it dislikes may not back down.
