Border Terrier health: what owners should know

The breed is usually hardy, but it is known for a few conditions. The best known is canine epileptoid cramping syndrome, sometimes called Spike's disease, which causes episodes of trembling, stiffness or difficulty walking. Epilepsy, an underactive thyroid, hip dysplasia and some heart and eye conditions are also seen. Responsible breeders hip score, have eyes examined and often heart test breeding dogs.

Keep your dog lean, keep up with dental care, and note anything unusual. If your Border has any episode of wobbling, cramping, shaking or collapse, film it on your phone if you can and contact your vet the same day. Weight gain with low energy and thinning coat is also worth a vet check.
