Japanese Spitz health: what owners should know
Conditions the Japanese Spitz is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.
The Japanese Spitz is considered a generally healthy breed with a long lifespan, often 12 to 16 years. The conditions most often noted are kneecap luxation, runny eyes with tear staining, and some inherited eye problems. Skin sensitivity occasionally appears, as in other white-coated dogs.
A careful breeder will have kneecaps checked, arrange eye examinations and talk openly about the health of their lines. At home, keep your dog lean, clean the eye area daily and keep up with dental care. See your vet if you notice heavy or colored eye discharge, squinting, frequent skipping on a back leg, or red, itchy skin under the coat.
