Training a Border Terrier: what works and what to expect

A Border was bred to make decisions underground without a handler, so it listens best when training feels worth its time. Food works very well with this greedy breed, and short, lively sessions keep it engaged. Borders are more sensitive than many terriers, and harsh handling often makes them stubborn rather than obedient.

Recall, a solid leave-it cue, and calm behavior around cats and small pets are the priorities. Many Borders live happily with cats they were raised with, while treating strange cats outside as fair game. Rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents in the same house need firm separation.
