Briards grow more slowly than many large breeds. Puppies reach most of their height by 12 to 14 months, but bone, chest depth and coat keep developing until age 2 or 3. The switch from puppy fluff to adult coat happens somewhere between about 9 and 18 months, a messy phase when mats appear quickly and daily brushing becomes necessary.
Feed a large-breed puppy food and keep the puppy lean to support its joints. Limit forced exercise such as long runs on a lead and repeated jumping until growth plates close at around 14 to 18 months. Socialization in the first 16 weeks is the most valuable investment you will make: meet many kinds of people, visit busy places calmly and reward relaxed behavior. A puppy that limps, bunny-hops with both back legs or resists stairs should see a vet.
